Dr Duncan Gilmore attended the 6th International Symposium held by the International Measurement Confederation in Brussels, May 1996. He is a member of their technical committee on robotics. The next generation of robots were discussed with applications which are far from our stereotyped images of car assembly. Robots are being designed to walk, climb, see, navigate, explore and behave quite autonomously. One worldwide problem highlighted was the clearing of land mines which requires a robust and reliable robot, which is also disposable for obvious reasons. |
